Roosevelt Festival
Speaking of the Elkins Forest Festival, the first one
was in 1938, when the great Franklin Delano
Roosevelt, President of the United States, was the
first Parade Marshal. There were about 125,000
people there, the largest crowd in the history
of the Forest Festival. One hundred and twenty
five thousand people in a town, with a normal
population of about 8,000. Whew!!
The Forest Festival has been held every year since.
Normally, the Festival attracts about 30,000 year
after year. The reason for the record crowd in 1938
was FDR, who years later was voted the Number 1
citizen of the 20 Century. Abraham Lincoln was
the Number 1 citizen of the 19th Century, and
George Washington was the Number 1 citizen
of the 18th Century.
FDR was so loved and popular because he brought
us out of the Great Depression and led us through
the terrible years of World War II. God placed Mr.
Roosevelt in our history at the right time.
What a man! Tom Brokaw's book,
The Greatest Generation,
was about those of us who lived through
that era. I am proud to say I saw FDR.
We started out toward the festival and got within
seven miles of Elkins, where it was held. The traffic
was bumper to bumper all the way to Elkins. We
were stopped cold. Not a car moved. We were
deadlocked.
Finally, everybody just shut off their motors
and walked the last seven miles into Elkins. Thousands
and thousands of people walking, all to see Roosevelt.
When the festival was over, we walked the seven
miles back.
Whew! Roosevelt, What a Man!
