Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must first deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. ( Matt. 16:24 )

Around 1970, I heard they were going to make a movie
out in Doddridge County, about a big battle in the Civil
War. Martin Sheen was the star and David Nelson
(of Ozzie and Harriet fame) was the director.
A few weeks before production was to begin, the
producer and director asked for volunteers from
the area to be in the movie as extras - as soldiers,
some in gray, some in blue.
Some of my friends and I volunteered and went out
to rural Doddridge County. I had on a blue uniform
fighting for the North. The battle began and the noise
was deafening, there was a lot of smoke, and the
director was running all over the place.
After the battle, Martin Sheen came over and patted
Melanie on the head. She was dressed like a little,
old fashioned girl. She sat beside David Nelson most
of the time. It was very interesting and a lot of fun
to be in, and be able to watch it being made.
Several weeks later, the world premier was held
at the Robinson Grand Theatre. It was packed.
A true story.
