Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must first deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. ( Matt. 16:24 )

Cal Kerr

A long time ago, when I was about twelve years
old, there was a man who lived right next door to
where we live right now, in the building where
Henthorne's Christian Bookstore used to be.
In those days, the building was
a private home. It had a sun porch and in nice
weather the windows were usually open.
Right across the street a bunch of us kids sitting on
the wall. Cal Kerr came over and stood waiting
for the streetcar. Cal Kerr was a proclaimed
atheist.
All the people who knew him knew he would curse
God and shake his fist toward the sky. He would be
glad to tell you he was an atheist.
All at once, Mr. Kerr grabbed his chest and moaned
very loudly, please help me! We kids were scared.
Mrs. Kerr and their daughter came running across
the street and all of us helped Mr. Kerr across
the street to his sun porch, where he lay down
on a day bed. He was fighting for his breath
and had a look of fear on his face.
All at once, Cal Kerr, life-long atheist, lying on his
back put both hands in the air and said, "God
have mercy on my soul," took his last
breath and died.
I have told this story many times to Mary Jane, my
wife, and asked her if a man was an atheist his
entire life and in the last thirty seconds of his life
asked for God's mercy, would God forgive him?
Mary Jane said Yes, God forgave Mr. Kerr.
I witnessed this completely.
