Then Jesus said to his disciples,

"If anyone would come after me,  he must first deny himself and

take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life

will lose it, but whoever loses  his life for me will find it.

Give Us Success Lord!

(Part 1)

The book of Nehemiah contains many keys to obtaining success in our  walk with God.

In Nehemiah 1:1-3,  Nehemiah questioned Hanani and some other men, who had  come from Judah about the Jewish remnant that had survived the exile.  He was told that though the remnant had survived, they were in great trouble and disgrace.  The wall of Jerusalem was broken down and its’ gates had been burned down. Spirits were very low. Although they were now free, they still were living in less than desirable circumstances, especially with no way of protecting themselves!

When Nehemiah heard these things he sat down and wept.  He didn’t waste time judging his brothers and sisters by the circumstances they found themselves in.  He didn’t send them the latest self-help book, so he wouldn’t have to “Get involved”.

Instead of having a judgmental attitude, or offering quick-fixes, Verse 4 tells us one of the keys to success in the Lord.  For some days, Nehemiah mourned and fasted and prayed for them.

When he approached God in prayer he first gave praise to God.  He then made his petition known to God.  He confessed both his sins and the sins of his people, and reminded God of His word and promises. He stated his deep concern for God’s glory and purposes, and continued to intercede for the people of Israel.  Nehemiah was so deeply burdened for his family and nation that he prayed and cried out to God for four months on their behalf.

Verses 10 and 11 state: They are Your servants and Your people, whom you redeemed by Your great strength and Your mighty hand.  O Lord, let Your ear be attentive to the prayer of this Your servant and to the prayer of Your servants who delight in revering Your name.  Give Your servant success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man.  “This Man” was Artaxerxes, King of Persia.  Nehemiah prayed God would grant him favor with the king on behalf of the Jews.

When we desire to obtain anything from others, for others, or for ourselves we should pray for God to move ahead of us and prepare the hearts and minds of those He chooses to use to bless us, or those we are praying for.

It’s very easy to get tired of interceding for others needs, even when we know them well, if  God doesn’t move as quickly in answering as we want Him to. Interceding for others requires deep love, commitment and perseverance. Jesus said they will know we are His by our love.  He also said if we’re not willing to pick up our cross and follow Him we’re not worthy to be called His disciples.  Have we, as Nehemiah did, allowed God’s love in us, to lead us to pick up our cross and follow Him, no matter what the cost?
